Our Reporter

Lagos State Government has given 890 Lagosians empowerment tools, including grinding machines, sewing/ whipping machines, hair dressing appliances, sterilising sets, popcorn production machines, generators, gas cookers and cylinders, among others.

The donation was made during the 2021 quarterly mega empowerment programme for vulnerable women and indigent residents at an event organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mrs. Folashade Sherifat Jaji, said the items would help  in overcoming the effect of the harsh economic realities occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors.

He said the gesture was in line with one of the administration’s objectives to alleviate poverty through the implementation of empowerment programmes targeted at women and other vulnerable groups.

The governor said: “This programme was initially organised once in a year, but we have increased it to four times in a year. This is because we want to increase the number of beneficiaries and we have achieved this. With the empowerment programmes, we have impacted on the lives of our women who have become economically productive with the resultant improvement in their lives and those of their families”.

Sanwo-Olu urged the beneficiaries to make use of the resources made available to them.

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Tutor General/ Permanent Secretary, Education District 2, Mrs Anike Adekanye, hailed the ministry for empowerment programme.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Dada, said the empowerment initiative serves as a means of improving the political, social, and economic and health status of Lagosians.
